  1. Whenever I attempted to create a table of contents from a
  2. WordPerfect 5.1 document, the Generate command would always
  3. recreate my chapter titles' underlining, even when I didn't
  4. want it to. By examining hidden codes using the Reveal Codes
  5. command (<Alt>-<F3>), I discovered a simple trick that lets
  6. me use special formatting without having it appear in the
  7. table of contents entries.

  9. The method takes advantage of the order in which WordPerfect
  10. inserts codes for titles and table of contents entries.
  11. Depending on the order in which you mark entries and
  12. underline titles, WordPerfect may reverse these symbols,
  13. causing unwanted underlines to print in the table of
  14. contents. By always having the table of contents (ToC) codes
  15. inside the underline codes, you ensure that WordPerfect
  16. prints underlined titles in the document but not in the
  17. table. The macro [below, available as P4WPM\ALTT.WPM on your
  18. PowerBase *.* Volume IV diskette] automatically marks my
  19. titles to produce clean table of contents entries.

  24. Editor's note: Start WordPerfect 5.1 and enter a sample
  25. chapter title. Move the cursor to the beginning of the title
  26. and enter the macro keystrokes, pressing <Enter> only where
  27. shown. When finished, load a document and position the
  28. cursor on each Level One title. Press <Alt>-T to underline
  29. the title and mark it for the table of contents.

  31. To generate the table, move the cursor to the beginning of
  32. the document. Make certain the cursor is on a blank line,
  33. not on a header. Then press <Ctrl>-<Enter><CursorUp>
  34. <Alt>-<F5>dc<Enter> to prepare a page for the table of
  35. contents, then <Alt>-<F5>ggy to make the table. In a few
  36. seconds, you'll see all your marked titles in the table,
  37. sans underlines.
